Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” After working as a reporter, Mr. Kenn Rashad did exactly that! He noticed a lack of media coverage on HBCU sports programs by mainstream media outlets; so, Mr. Rashad created TSPN Sports in 1997. He had no prior experience in building Web sites, and he knew next to nothing about the World Wide Web. Yet, he refused to allow his lack of experience and knowledge to stop him!
Kenn purchased a do-it-yourself book at a local computer store and taught himself Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), which is a standardized system for tagging text files to complete various effects on Web pages. That move, along with the implementation of basic Internet marketing strategies, eventually led to TSPN Sports becoming one of the largest and most highly trafficked HBCU sports information sites on the Web. Those successes developed into other opportunities, and he is definitely leaving a trail!
The honoree is president and CEO of Rashad Interactive, LLC, which is located in Flower Mound, Texas. He is also co-founder and COO of Rashmoor Media, a publishing company that delivers specialty content targeted for African-American audiences. Kenn is clearly putting his bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Grambling State University to great use, but he wanted to further his education. He said, “Despite my best efforts to educate myself in the world of business and entrepreneurship, it had become clear that there were a number of things I didn’t know.”
He added, “It was the little things I didn’t know that prevented me from advancing past certain obstacles. I had come to the conclusion that if I was going to make the most of my business endeavors, it would be best to become educated on business in an environment with a structured path. I’ve since completed my studies, but only time will tell what impact it will have on my career.” After earning an MBA in marketing from the Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry Univeristy, Kenn Rashad is expected to do bigger and better things!
